HydroSim is a hydrometallury library, for simulation, modelling, and optimisation of processes of metal extraction and related phenomena. It has been used for preparation of results for peer-reviewed publications in this field, and was written by Luis Cisternas.

The HydroSim library includes different models of leaching, solvent extraction (SX), and electroextraction/electrowinning, as well as models to represent states and auxiliary stages. These models include several levels of complexity, for example several models are provided for stages of extraction/stripping. Each model can be used individually or joined together with others to conduct studies of hydrometallurgical circuits and allowing evaluation of the interaction of variables in each stage and/or the overall process.

Different applications have been studied, including

  • the simultaneous equilibrium of copper and iron in copper extraction processes,
  • effect of internal recycle on mixer settlers (continuous phase),
  • extraction circuit simulations,
  • the effect of irrigation rate in static and dynamic leaching batteries

The library can be utilised not only through the provided models, but also, being transparent and open-source, can be easily expanded or modified, allowing other studies to be performed.
